Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna is understood to have apologised for his '10 versus 12' Instagram post following his side's 2-1 win against Burnley on 2 January.
The post, which Sagna deleted, referred to referee Lee Mason controversially sending Fernandinho off after 32 minutes.
The Football Association asked Sagna for his observations, which were sent in by Friday's deadline.
It is understood Sagna said he had made the posting in the heat of the moment and took it down when he realised the significance of it.
The FA are still to decide what action to take over the matter.
