Indomitable Lions' Old Faces, New Challenges

Two years after the 2010 World Cup debacle, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are vying for another expedition to South Africa. This time, it is for the 29th edition of the African Cup of Nations slated for January 2013. After missing out on the 28th edition co-hosted by Centre African neighbours, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, the Lions and officials are leaving no stone unturned to make sure, the qualification ticket is within reach.

For the away leg last round qualifying encounter against Cape Verde on September 8, the national trainer, Denis Lavagne has called to camp twenty-three players. Among the twenty-three are; Samuel Eto'o, Achilles Emana, Alexandre Song and Carlos Kameni cited as ring leaders in the controversies that marred the Lions adventure during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Though Captain Samuel Eto'o has said he will not be present because of lack of professionalism in the management of the team, the gradual re-admission into the Lion's den of these key players has not only raised many questions, but ignited debates in the different soccer circles. The first of such questions is whether their being called to camp implies the problem of clans and egoism which led to squabbles in the team has been laid to rest?

The second question is that of discipline. Are the players ready to respect the internal rules and regulations of the team? The third question is how sain is the environment around the team? And lastly, does the coach have the ability and technical know-how to exert authority on the group?

If answers or solutions to the above questions have been found, then one can say without any fear of contradiction that the Indomitable Lions are on track for a smooth ride to South Africa, but if not then, we are barely throwing water on the duck's back.
